Orofacial dysfunction can set off a domino effect in the body. An initial issue, such as difficulty breathing through the nose, structural restrictions like a tongue tie, or oral habits like thumb sucking, can disrupt normal oral function.
Over time, this can lead to mouth breathing and an incorrect oral resting posture. These changes may contribute to a range of further challenges, including altered facial and dental development, speech difficulties, sleep disturbances, and other health concerns.
These aren’t things you have to live with. Simple, effective therapy can address the root causes and bring real relief.
What is myofunctional therapy?
Myofunctional therapy is a specialised approach that uses gentle exercises to strengthen and retrain the facial and oral muscles. ‘Myo’ means muscle and ‘functional’ refers to how these muscles perform their natural actions.
The four goals of myofunctional therapy are:
Nasal breathing
Proper resting posture of the tongue and mouth
Effective lip seal
Correct chewing and swallow pattern
Through guided exercises and techniques, we help children and adults to correct orofacial myofunctional disorders that involve abnormal movement patterns of the oral and facial muscles to gradually develop proper oral resting posture, breathing and swallowing.
The benefits extend far beyond the muscles themselves:
Better sleep quality
Improved nasal breathing
Better chewing and swallow patterns
Correct oral posture and development
Support for orthodontic treatment results
Aesthetic benefits
Overall improved wellbeing for the whole family
This gentle, non-invasive therapy works with your child’s natural development to support proper craniofacial growth and improves overall health and function in adults and children to create lasting positive changes.
